Spaces are included in the limit. 36 bytes are allocated for the name, and the spaces need to fit in there somewhere.

Have you changed any robot behaviors?
Also you may want to run a check mine in the diagnostics tab in case something like a bad wall is causing issues.

That effect is hardcoded into Descent 1. Aside from modifying the default behavior of the robot itself, it is impossible to override robots in this way.

I've had this issue before. IIRC it had something to do with the undo buffer, which starts to have problems if you have DLE open for too long. You can generally fix it by running the check mine function in the diagnostics tab (though make sure 'auto fix bugs' is on).

I'm not 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure that the images are palette references to descent.256.

Something else you can try if you have a level editor (i.e. DLE) is exporting the image from within the editor. It takes longer, but you do get a standard image format as a result.
