Those were my thoughts as well... if you do it well enough, you can create a terrain out of polygons that looks reasonably realistic and can do a little more than a simple heightmap.

Edit - although you do have lighting to worry about still.

It's not too bad, although I think the bump mapping could be reduced... it doesn't need to be quite THAT dramatic. :)

I found it funny how frequently they were reminding people to vote during the MTV video awards. (Yes, I was. Don't ask.) Firstly, it appears you need to have Vertigo installed on your system.

Secondly, you have to make sure the 'missions:' 'folder' under Preferences is pointing to your Descent 2 HOG file.

You will need to click 'Apply' then restart DLE-XP for the Vertigo option to become available.

Being easy to use isn't inherently a bad thing, of course. Even decent level designers often shy away from tools like D3Edit because they're just so laborious. It'd probably be easier to build them in 3DS Max and import them than do every single polygon in D3Edit. But it shouldn't cater to the lowes...

It shouldn't mean problems with collision detection unless your algorithm is dodgy.

It will mean more clutter though.

But hey, look at Descent 3 level 4... and that was 1999.

Edit: Plus, they were all alive once. You're not exactly adding to the load on memory... so it could be done.

DMB2 will hardly do anything DLE-XP won't; there isn't too much reason to be using it.

The -one- thing I've found it supports that DLE-XP doesn't is floating-point move rates.

It is interesting, but regarding the Infinite Abyss collection they screwed it up a bit. I have that set, and it doesn't contain D1. It only contains the original D2, the Win95 version, the Vertigo expansion, and DMB2 version 2.3. The Definitive Collection, on the other hand, does contain D1. I'd gu...

If you can find D1 out there, it should be possible to get it to work at least -marginally- using the D1x Win32 builds (version 1.43). That'll at least give you an idea of the gameplay and flow, even if the sounds suck or the joystick doesn't work. The main differences in D1 compared to D2 are - Bet...
