run
run
look at where you are
if you got up right now
and ran as fast as you could
how far could you get from where you are right now
in 30 seconds?

Hopefully somewhere beyond your mind.

through the office door, to the stairs, out the building, over the campus, on my way to the sandwich shop.
if only it wasn't raining.

Re: run
I could get to the other side of my office window (which would be out the office door, down the hall, down another hall, through the lobby door, and then around the corner of the building).

Re: run
Currently I wouldn't make it out the house. That's because I'm in bed.
If I was more up it would be:
leap up, jump out the window (yes, its open and would save time)
then down the path, open the gate, down the drive.
maybe a few tens of meters down the road.

Re: run
I might make it out of my chair, but I'm pretty sure I could procrastinate those 30 seconds away.
Re: run
tried it.
Took me ~17 seconds to get off the property,
then from there i was able to get 50 meters down the street.
There is basically 10 houses (incl my own) within range of my 30 second sprint.
Anyway, inspired by this punctuation-less thing i read.

Helen called Jane at 5 in the morning.
“There’s a hot air balloon here,” Helen said. “At the park.”
“Hot damn! I am on my way,” Jane replied.
It took Jane one minute to get dressed and out the door, and it took her five minutes to bike down to the park. This was one of Helen’s favourite things about Jane. When she said, “I’m leaving now,” on the phone, she would be out the door within a minute.
Jane parked her bike against a tree, and the two girls approached the man standing beside the balloon.

I just took off my running shoes. I might have tried this for science.
My best guess is, out of the neighborhood. I'm like a really good runner.

Re: run
What is this 30 seconds? I could to the basement in ~8 from anywhere in the house, and that's the only place I could think of which would require that kind of haste (in a weather emergency). I can get to the bathroom in 2 seconds, if it's really urgent... ;P
Re: run
Next time I go running in the mornings (ie, next week when I'm back on my normal routine) I'm going to try this.
Eh?
Re: run
out the door, to the car and across town if I went wide open throttle.
Re: run
In 30 seconds I'd get further running. If I were to try the car:
Sprint out of house after grabbing key.
Run to the gate, open the gate
Fumble for correct key
Open the car door
Get in car and start engine.
Reverse and turn.
Accelerate forwards down the drive-way
Brake at end of driveway to turn onto road.
Pretty sure thats more than 30 seconds already.
Let's expand:
A bike would get me further than the car, and possibly further than running.
But in more than a minute or so, a car would get you furthest, unless you can't use petrol stations. Then within a day or so a bike would be the best form of transport.
However, where I live a bat would also be good, as I'd run out of land in a day (or less) solid driving in any direction, or half an hour in the closest direction.
Given two hours warning, I reckon we could manage to get off the land and onto the sea with roughly a months worth of food, and a week or so of water. It is a sail boat with 4 berths, so we could in theory get to another island, but I'm not convinced that we would get to another island very easily, both because of the small size of our boat, lack of drinking water and our own lack of experience at off-shore navigation. With more time we could stock one of our family friends keel-boat (30 something feet. Still not that big), which would be capable of getting us to another island.
Or with a few hours planning we could also get into the mountains and flee civilization that way. We've done over week-long tramps, but generally only with a few weeks planning, making dehydrated food etc. So without that time it would be roughly a weeks worth of food we can carry. With sufficient planning and time I reckon we might get that to 2 or 3 weeks. Water isn't a problem in the mountains around here, only food is, so hopefully within that time we could find some way to gather our own food.
Chances are that no matter how things go, within a month or so I'd be dead, assuming I was allowed no contact with people outside my family. By myself it would probably be slightly less. The boat would be out of the question, as it takes 2 to sail. I could still make it to the mountains, and set up a camp there, but the amount of food one person can carry is a lot less than 4, and so I'd give myself only 1-1.5 weeks to find a solution to food. With only one working on this problem, it would be even less likely to succeed though. And that's assuming a week's planning (BTW 'planning' mainly involves dehydrating food to reduce weight, meaning a full meal for 4 weighs less than 200grams).
With an hour planning I'd again get to the mountains, but with food and gear for an even shorter time, probably only 4-5 days.
Thinking about it though, if I abandoned all other weight for food and essential gear (ie drop a lot of extra clothing, to just what I'm wearing and wet weather gear, drop the tent) I might be able to raise the time, even to just beyond a week.
Right, let's try a different way. Let's say I stay put. Whatever I would have run from, I hide, and somehow make it through.
At home we always have a month's worth of luxury living food. This could easily be stretched to 3 or 4 months with rationing. Water would be a little more of an immediate problem, but here the water table is only 2-4 meters underground. I know some people down the road (roughly 1 km, an hour's walk or so) with their own well and pump. The pump wouldn't work without electricity, but we could probably draw water by hand, at least until we could dig a more convenient well for our neighborhood. (Call it a day or so two of dedicated work. Easy as long as we have water for that time.)
We have gas stoves (tramping and our main stove) and a BBQ for cooking. If we stopped having hot showers, and dedicated our gas solely for cooking instead of heating water, it would last ages.
Staying put seems to be the best idea, with a life-span of 3-4 months for the family, or by myself, half a year or more. Within that time we may be self-sufficient enough. (We have a sizable veggie patch, and several hens). Assuming some neighbors were gone, or agreed to it, their land could be converted into more growing space within that time. Meat would be short really soon, but potatoes and other substantial plants like that would have grown enough by the time our immediate food ran out.
Heating might be a problem during winter, but I imagine in pressing circumstances we'd just put up with it. I'm really not liking the meat situation, as there are no prospects within a few months of having any sustaining meat source. There simply isn't the space around here, and nowhere to get an initial start. We could breed the hens, but with such a small starting number it wouldn't last long, no matter how hard we tried. I guess we'd turn into vegetarians.
What are we running from anyway?

But what if your car could jump back in time, over a minute? then you'd be able to travel a great distance in only under negative thirty seconds, assuming you don't wreck into уͭ̂͐̇҉̴̣̼̞̠̯͓̺̞ourself.

It's just that my 30 second game is apparently catching on really fast.
I know it looks alarming when lots of people are doing it at once, but it's ok, really.
HAHA COME ON GUYS LET SEE HOW FAR WE CAN GET FROM STARBUCKS IN 30 SECONDS! I BET I CAN MAKE IT TO THAT CAR!!
ALMOST 30 SECONDS COME ON, WE CAN PROBABLY MAKE IT AROUND THIS CORNER IF WE RUN REALLY HARD!

Re: run
But would the police box still be there? Have you checked to make sure it's the right size on the inside?
And if it isn't, or if it's locked, and it's still there, you should probably keep running. Until you're very far away.

Heard the following line from Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees" this morning, and it reminded me of this thread:
