Blue Screen of Death Patch

Post by Tunnelcat »

Microsoft's latest update set on 4/9/13, specifically KB 2823324, has caused some users to have BSOD's accompanied by endless reboots with those users who also have Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8. Microsoft is now recommending every user who got this patch to uninstall this particular update.

I have this update installed, and I have shut down my PC a couple times since it has been installed for thunderstorms and or working on electrical stuff in the house and have had no issues, the same for the other two Windows 7 machines in the house which probably automatically installed it as well. It may be because all the PCs here are running x64 versions of Windows, and this bug only impacts 32 bit versions. If you are concerned that it could cause an issue on your PC, probably the quickest and easiest way to uninstall it is to type the following command into an elevated (aka administrator) command prompt:

Code: Select all

wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:2823324 /quiet /norestart

Kind of funny how MS can push patches but not remotely uninstall them... Also, as of last Thursday the patch was removed from WU. If you updated after that you'll be fine.

You will have to restart tho, the patch is modifying ntfs.sys. Had a few W7x64 machines w/ the patch installed w/o problems as well. Nevertheless, I took it out. I'm not a friend of having a buggy ntfs driver running.

I took it out too. I'll wait until Microsoft fixes things.

Microsoft update.... Sans - global alpha testing!

So how do you recover from this if the rebooting starts?

Safe Mode?

Automatic installation of patches is an opt-in thing... the WU service isn't exactly designed to do the reverse :)
While it probably could be "fixed" to do that, there are some legal complications, not to mention 95% of the time the only "customers" who will be demanding this sort of capability in Windows are the MPAA and their ilk...
