Congratulations! That's awesome. I've been meaning to give the game a run-through and throw some feedback your way, but I've been super busy lately.

I can't get it to run at a decent framerate -- my computer should be able to do way better graphically than this; and there seems to be something wrong with my controls...

The existing build is really just for people to look at, none of the control work has been put in and it doesn't even have stick support, the new build is almost a full featured game so stay tuned.

Is the build you're currently working on the one that will include a linux binary?

some of the maps are really slow, and some maps aren't lit. Could you fix this?

Those maps are not meant to be played yet, they are only in there for testing.

Looks like you and your project are off to a good start!

One bug that immediately stood out (linux x86-64 build 100) is that on first run, I couldn't move at all until I first went into the Config menu and then left (without even making any changes). After doing that, I can move even when exiting and restarting the program.

I can reproduce this bug by running

Code: Select all

rm -rf '~/.config/unity3d/Anarchy Interactive/'
to simulate running the game for the first time.

Especially since there's no joystick support yet, I think a simple addition that would make it feel more like Descent's keyboard controls would be to add a "toggle slide" key and a "toggle bank" key so that if, for example, you pressed an arrow key when, say, the alt key was pressed, you would slide instead of turn.

There is stick support in the latest build...

Movement toggle keys are a great evil, and they never should have been in Descent! If you can't move in every axis at once while firing both primary and secondary you are a cripple.

You'd better disable keyboard-only play all together then. :P

If that functionality is holding you back I'll add it in otherwise it's not a priority right now.
If anyone wants to be in touch and get builds as I build them and not as I release them please feel free, I DRASTICALLY need testers...

I suppose you're right. Even though I could come up with a fair pro keyboard config, it wouldn't work on low-grade keyboards. Perhaps it would be enough for a game to have a few "pro" default configurations which require certain types of controllers, or keyboards which can press so many keys at once, to at least obviate the fact that toggle movement is the domain of the amateur with basic equipment.
