What is that??

Here's what I see:

It looks terrible, unless maybe you're using the default theme.

Look, here's a quick keying I did using imagemagick

Code: Select all

convert logo.png -scale 900x -median 3 -fuzz 5% -transparent black -scale 375x result.png
Result:

It's hardly perfect, but it's a better placeholder than what we currently have.

edit:

Here's what it would look like.

Swapped. But if you can do better, by all means post it and I'll swap it again. Also do one at 2x resolution if possible, the forum dynamically switches between a small "standard definition" one and a larger "high definition" one for people with large and/or high DPI displays.

Cool and thanks for the quick response.

I'll work out a vector version that looks the same then export it to a png. I'll reply here when it's ready. Might take me a day since I'm a little busy, but it should be fun to make.

So as you can see...

Image

...I'm doing this manually. It's going to take me more than a day. My apologies. I honestly thought the automatic pixel to vector program would work here, but it did not. The results were muddy looking. So doing it by hand is probably going to have the best result.

It takes a while, but once it's done it should look pretty good.

edit:
Slow going... Even once I got all the letters in I need to go back and tweak the shading.

Sorry again. I'm now trying to get colors and shading to work. Letters like the E look wrong so now I'm just going back and trying to get that same depth the original had.
Letters and zoomed in version of those letters:

edit: It's getting closer:

edit:

Fighting it... Don't think it will be done today... :E :E

At a glance it looks close to being finished. But if you compare each letter you can see I got a lot of work ahead to make it match.

update:

Maybe tomorrow it will be be close to done.

After stepping away from it for a bit, I don't think it's as bad as I used to think.

Krom and anyone else, what are your thoughts? The "E" and "S" are kinda the wrong shape, but other than that, how close is it?

I think it looks great. The typeface differences are barely noticeable and it's supremely impressive you were able to recreate something this close. Can you tell us how you did it?

Looks pretty good to me, as long as you save it as a png with the full alpha channel set up it should work fine. As for the "high definition" copy, the original is 375x63, so at least double that to 750x126 which would be good for up to 200% text scaling (I wouldn't complain if you went even larger than that if you wanted).

As for the e and the s, I think I see what you are talking about, the lines on the newer image are more solid/defined and I think that makes them look proportionally a little thicker as a result. Still good enough to me, but you're the artist. ;)

Of course, vision. I'm using an open source vector art program called Inkscape. I encourage you to download it to try: https://inkscape.org/en/
To get an idea of how it works, here's what the letter d in descent looks like when I'm working on the vector lines:

I can make a shape and blur it then layer that shape over others to give the illusion of depth, as shade or a highlight.

:E :E :E

Krom, let me know if you need changes. This includes improving the shading or exporting to a different resolution. Here's my submission:

375x63

750x126

Here's the source document for your descent related archives:

Oh sweet Jesus.

I'm already an expert in Inkscape, but what you are doing looks like insanity. Did you trace the whole image or do you have the typeface? I think I have a generic of that typeface. It's pretty popular, but the name escapes me right now.

Very cool! It's a great program to know. Yes, I had to trace everything by hand since I didn't know where to find the font.
