Definitely, all Obsidian levels are pretty enjoyable. Just the very layout of the levels, all made by Sirius and Darkhorse worths the play.

If your plan is simply changing texturing of robots, you're doin' it the hard way. :P If you are just modifying weapons, AI and textures (not replacing the actual model of the robot) you can do it all from RbotEdit, without using Haxmedit at all. You're putting it pretty hard, as choosing just one level is not an easy task with so many missions available.

I might be able to say my favorite level of each official (Parallax-made) Descent mission, and maybe a favorite from fanmade missions.

Just for the record, the latest XL version is a bit flawed and has the bugs you are describing Megadescent. The author of D2X-XL is aware of those bugs, but he says they may be related to the Occulus Rift code and right now he doesn't has one to test and debug the issues, so we may have to wait. But...

Kruel campaigns will run perfectly on the original engine. In fact, I played those missions for the first time back on the old-school days, way before the creations of the XL or Rebirth ports. Because they push the old engine to the limit, using very complex achiteture on big rooms (like the main central chamber on Level 26).
The original engine was not so optimized to render such complex stuff obviously, as on the old days of Descent a Pentium was the most you could aspire.

I think Black Prophecy, Colossus and Legacy of Chaos may run fine on DOSBox, as they doesn't has any element that would break the old engine, IIRC. Not sure about Nefarious Assault, TBH. And of all those missions on the new list, Legacy of Chaos is the best and is a must, although it is not part of ...

Well, I don't like Multiplayer that much and I'm still in love of Descent 1 & 2 because of Single-Player up to this date, so Vision has a point.
In fact Descent is such a good game that be for the MP or for the SP, it remains alive because of how badass it is on both sides! :D
