There was a news story recently, however, that proposed a link between ETA to Al Queda. Apparently, ETA has been around in Spain since the 1960s. It was a group of revolutionaries in the beginning, but it quickly degraded into senseless bombings on civilian targets. There was a significant crackdown...

When pondering how far away the galaxies in those pictures are, consider this. The light we see emitting from those galaxies travelling at the speed light does, took 13 billion years to get here. That's practically age of the Earth old. That's more years than it will take for our own sun to supernov...

Okay maybe HDTV wasn't the greatest analogy, but you get my point. It will take quite a shift before hybrid technology (by which I mean fuel-electric cars, fuel cells, solar, etc) becomes less expensive than traditional fossil fuels.

I think the question is what Lothar said - when cheap oil supplies have been used up, then what? I don't think Doom necessarily died. Since the source code was released, there have been legions of people toying with the engine. Thus far, they've managed to incorporate gradual lighting effects (as in Descent), corridors under corridors, and several other things the original Doom couldn't do.
