Thanks, thought as much. Well, that's not entirely a bad thing, as it makes one use one's head.

Separating texture movement

Hey guys, I wonder if you could help me with this simple thing. Is it possible to disassociate the alignment of one texture from the alignment of the other? This would help avoid situations such as this one: http://s6.postimage.org/569n2dey9/scrn0007.jpg The texture on the left could be aligned to m...

Re: What do you think D1 beats D2 at?

Yeah. Too bad that D2 just didn't feel like D1. It had its advantages in the atmosphere, but it also lacked many of D1's qualities. But for me, the things that contributed grandly to the overall D1 experience were the title screen music, briefing music and well duh, the rest of the music. also some ...

Re: Favorite D2 Single-Player Campaigns

Well, TEW of course, it's a very rewarding and complete experience in its own right. I also love how it's story-driven. Several levels are among the best designs so far, however others were unremarkable to downright ugly. Well, guess that's how things go with community projects... it's still amazing...

I've played several if not most of the big community projects, but still I've gotta say that my favorite missions are First Strike and Vertigo.

Of the user-made ones, Vignettes rule though.

Limefrost Spiral just slams Lou Guards down your throat. And they're not that annoying IMO. It's just their homers that you need to worry about. And Boarsheads, RUN LIKE HELL. Boarsheads are only dangerous if you have no room to dodge. Smart plasma is not nearly as hard to dodge as homers are. Kwod...

Re: Sloppy level design

Can't say I've noticed texture misalignments or stretched textures so much in Descent 1, but I've definitely noticed a lot more about the way cubes were used across the first two games thanks to an older discussion. Looking back, D1 in particular feels sloppier not because of texture mistakes, but ...

Re: best looking Vertigo Bot?

I voted for Sniper NG. Vertigo overall didn't have memorable bots in my opinion, most of them were too small too. The ingenuity from Descent 1 shown with simple but beautiful bots such as Class 2 Drone was nowhere to be found. SPIKE looked awesome, but my vote went where it went mainly due to nostal...

Re: The tactical choice between Quad laser 4 and Plasma

Fusion is overrated :P. I think the question is how does a laser, which is a beam of light mind you, knock such heavy objects around? I guess Descent treats light as a particle rather than a wave... But light shouldn't be that massive. Well, you've got a point! Plasma, if I'm not mistaken, is super...

Re: Silly Descent Moments

Descent 2 overall gets tricky, annoying and hard on Ace and Insane, but there is no feeling of threat that Descent 1 invoked. There are plenty of faster, nastier and lighter-hitting robots instead of the few ones who will teach you terror with single volleys. That's why Descent 2's SP is not as impa...

Re: The tactical choice between Quad laser 4 and Plasma

Well, Fusion is a given, it also sees a lot of use from me. As for the knockback/stun, it should also be noticed that the difficulty level one plays on makes a large impact on that. On Trainee it's possible to make a Super Hulk shift his launchers to the sides just with lvl 1 laser, while on Insane ...

The tactical choice between Quad laser 4 and Plasma

I have noticed two primary differences between lasers and plasma. Quad lasers have the advantage of stopping most robots from firing, but they also push robots back quite a bit. Plasma, on the other hand, doesn't stop robots from attacking, but doesn't push them back either. It would seem that the k...

Descent was still probably able to take advantage of greater graphic technology than Doom, coming as it did two years later. Re: Sloppy level design

I believe the cut corners in the D1 levels were more a result of a tight schedule and a very small crew (I think they had something like half a dozen level designers, most of whom also had other roles in the project). Throw in the fact that they were using very crude tools (Miner) and the 320x200 r...

I told you before, the pulse rock cutter sound is in D2. The robot sound that was the best at instilling a sense of "I MUST KILL THIS THING NOW!" was the Driller in D1. I really wish they would have put the right sound in the 22KHz sound effects file for D2. It just sounds cheesy in Vertigo. I have done some sound engineering on that file and c...
