Which CH stick would YOU use?

Suppose you ONLY wanted to play Freespace and Descent AND NO OTHER GAMES and had a choice between a CH Fighterstick, CH Combatstick, and a CH Flightstick pro, which would you pick, and why?

Serious inquiry - please, serious replies.

After looking at images online it was a draw between the fighterstick and the combatstick (which LOOK almost the same). The flightstick pics i saw didn't have that natural shape that made the others look more comfortable. If i were to buy any of them, i would try them out first at Fry's electroincs here in Austin texas.

note: i stopped buying joysticks after the last one i had broke... d2 bots die just as fast with my mouse.

Mice don't have hat switches for sliding

And we ain't got no Fry's here in the valley.

get the Fighterstick the extra buttons make it worth it

I had my original Combatstick(gameport) for 7 years before I gave it away when i migrated to USB back in 2002

my current Combat stick was used in My Frankenforce Force Feedback project, everything else I use the Fighterstick for.....

The best addition to a CH Joystick is the CH Pro Throttle.

NO other Joystick line compares to CH Products and our community and their company support is second to none

The stick is just personal choice, I used the Flightstick Pro because it has the symmetrical button layout, and because I also used the pedals and throttle, so I didn’t need the extra buttons.

But I would add, the throttle is just about useless for Descent without my special modification for centering the handle.

Their sticks are also a little long in the gimble, and need some tuning for dog fighting.

Keep in mind that most CH Products are designed for “flight control” and not for general gaming. And are easily out performed by other products in Descent.

I heard about CH offering a “Gamestick” at one time, that had a twist, I never got around to buying one, because I had to stop playing.

What easily outperforms CH in Descent?

I'm leaning towards the combatstick because it has enough buttons and extra hats, where the fighterstick seems to have too much. Having tried throttles in descent before, I don't think I'll be getting one; the keyboard is preferred for most of what I'd be doing with it.

You'll find that a vast number of Descent players prefer the MS Sidewinder sticks, primarily the original 3DPro, with others (like myself) voting for the Precision Pro or Force-Feedback Pro.

They're out of production, but I've found them from time to time on Craigslist or EBay.

I might be waiting a while to get that joystick.

Foil: while player preference may indeed swing that way, I don't agree those sticks outperform CH. If it weren't for the weak hat switch, I'd still be using a Wingman Extreme, even. I remember I didn't like the MS Sidewinder or forcefeedback series; I certainly don't like the feel of twist handles.

Maybe I should invent a mouse with a hat switch...

This mouse dosn't have a hat but it's scroll wheel can bank left to right.

Newegg ain't heard of 'em, and neither has Amazon... surely, someone has to have it cheaper than 80 bux.

However, I am sold. In analyzing what joysticks had over mice, I concluded it had to be the hat switch. This mouse rules!

I almost got one. Too flimsy tho, it'll not survive a day of D3.

And no, I will not get a mouse w/ a hat switch, it just doesn't work in games for me -- I grab a mouse w/ thumb and ring finger, using the index & middle fingers for the buttons. A hat on top is counter intuitive for me, the hat under thumb will make the grip unstable.

I've played Descent for now 14 years w/ a joystick -- I'm not going to switch to a mouse

This is what I use for Descent, and by no means is the Pro Throttle useless as Spidey would have you to believe

I do have other joystick combinations for the different games and simulators I play

BTW except for the Pedals those are all photoshoped pictures of my hardware

Also I can not wait for BSG-Beyond the Red Line and DCS KA-50 BlackShark

Heck, if you're going to use DH, might as well for a Thrustmaster Cougar. Costs about the same

Personally, I use a Saitek X52 flight control system and like it. It's a fair bit cheaper than the CH stuff.

Thrustmaster Cougar - Chinese knockoff held together with twine and chewing gum with limited programming. Did I mention it takes another 600$ aftermarket parts ontop of the Original $250 investment to actually make the Cougar perform (not program) like a CH controller.

Lets just say this - Used Thrustmaster (aka Guillemot) and used Saitek(aka MadKatz) and both have landed in the trash heap

I do regret it now..... since I do Joystick MODS. I should have kept the Chinese lead based Pot metal carcasses of the Thrustmaster for a Poly Resin CH MOD

Now if you are just talking about using the stick for the buttons, then sure. Although that’s a very expensive set of buttons, if you are not making use of the analog handle.

People…those throttles are designed to have a zero thrust set at the botton of the axis…not in the middle, and to set zero thrust, you simply pull the stick all the way back, easy right, not so easy in Descent.

If you don’t want to take my word for it, go ahead and spend the money, then find out how hard it is to use.

But I have the trick…

I remember using throttles (not the really big ones mind) in Mechwarrior... you'd find the ... approximate middle. And really, that was enough.

I have used the Throttle's Axis for over 10 years

I can also have 4 variations of the axis via programing if I want

A throttle with no “tactile” or otherwise physical “center” is pretty much useless to “my” flying style.

I was just trying to offer it as a caveat, maybe I overstated it.

BTW the info I got about the lack of centering, was directly from CH, so stick that too.

If you don't want to use the twist, then definitely go mouse. The additional maneuverability I get from using the twist is almost the sole reason I've played joystick for so long.
