My (new) open box instrument - Im waiting for fedex

Post by TheWhat »

Made in South Korea 2025 serial number
Schecter Stilleto 5 Studio - Honey Satin

The quarter inch dent is what brought the price from $1249 to $849. The photos are the actual bass taken by Sweetwater at their warehouse.

Schecter has a reputation as a studded nutcup tightpants metalhead instrument company but I played my pals 4 string and the body was solid. I wanted a new toy. :]
Oh yeah I have to let it sit in my house for 24 hours to acclimate so I can't pretend I'm Nathan Watts til tomorrow

So far so good. The headstock dent isnt noticable unless you're a neener-neener dink. I played it for 20 minutes and then tighted the truss rod an eigth of a turn to lower the strings and the thing is intonated (they mustve done a setup). Fuckin rad bass and it doesnt sound like my Jazzbass which is good!

I cant wait to pretend Im a black person playing slow jams sayin gurl you look real pretty in that sundreff.

Looks great. I bought my first five string about two years ago. It was really stressful, I wanted to fall in love and didn't want to buy online so I went to every music store in a progressively wider radius from my place then played every bass until I found one that "clicked." It wound up being a Yamaha TRBX 505, and no other bass came close. I think the reason why I liked it is because it has similarities to other basses I own. It's my main bass and I play it every day (though in my band I play my friend's Fender J-Bass). I will say, however, I don't like the Yamaha's pickups and I've been thinking about swapping them out, but haven't seriously looked into it. I'm really good at recording so it's not that big of a deal but also it would be nice to have a sound that needs less tweaking. Although the bass I really wanted was a Yamaha BB, I just don't have the cash for it.

That Yamaha looks real perty. The active/passive switch adds a whole nuva pallet at the flick of a switch but on my Fender the active is +10db or something you have to roll back on the volume knob. I learned on a Yamaha bass way back I think they are excellent. It's funny because some brands where I don't like the guitars the basses are nice. Like I think Ibanez basses are great but their guitars are like balsa wood to me.

Yeah, a lot of these old South Minneapolis houses have lovely woodwork. If not for the nameless, masked secret police putting 10 rounds in peoples backs and being flown out of town like nothing happened it would be just peachy!

Ok. Now that I'm done shoveling a blizzard out by hand (oogah-boogah big muscle) I can get back to messin' about.

I've been experimenting with trussrod adjustment as I have never owned a 5 string and I'm not sure about the tension of the instrument. The Jazz bass is 34" scale and the 5 string is 35" scale. One adjustment I did earlier in the week caused noticeable hand fatigue after an hour so I knew that was wrong - also, switching between the 5 and the Jazz bass (cross-training?) I realized I have the Jazz dialed in. The setup is what I call (goopy) some say "springy", it means my sweetspot. So I'm trying to get the 5 into that zone - I know it will be different because of the scale and string tension but it seems a little stiff. I do actually write down the settings using automotive gauges, in a different life I would've drunkenly just set it and not know why it worked like an oatmeal brained American slob with small tits.

Also, I still don't understand why nobody joined my Descent 3 clan in 2001 - I guess no one liked the name {FwS} - Fat White Sluts. It was very lonely and isolating that no one wanted to join and proudly display their badge.

This ★■◆● is not hard to understand though. I don't even bother with gauges, I just hold down the string at the first and last fret to see how much relief is in the neck then adjust the truss rod and saddles. It usually takes about two weeks for the bass to settle in, then I only have to make seasonal adjustments. If after those couple weeks I'm still not happy then I look into different strings or custom string gauges, then I start the process over again (I like balanced tension, the higher strings in standard sets are always too thick/tight). Sometimes I have to file the nut or some frets.

I'm a big fan of the D'Addario string tension tool:
https://www.daddario.com/pages/string-t ... calculator

In my opinion, the neck is the most important part of the instrument. It's what determines how well it plays. Strings are next important since they are what is between the neck and your fingers. Everything else is mutable.

Maybe Im not as confident as you? Until a few years ago I always paid a luthier to do setups for me. It was expensive and time consuming but was worth it as my Telecaster was happy. A few years ago I figured I would try to do most of it myself - filing nut slots is a no-no.

I bought a straight edge, gauges (automotive and radius), and long hex wrenches for each guitars truss rods because theyre all different. The Jazz bass is the only one I have acting excellent, the Tele needs help of the refretting kind (which is way out of my skill set), and I havent had a 5 before.

So I thank you for the D'Addario link I use their strings for my Tele and acoustics. I have considered resstringing the 5 because Im unsure of what the guitar actually went through and am not used to Ernie Ball but changing bass strings is not the same as 6 string. Its pretty common for people to never change bass strings ever.

To complicate things the seasons are changing so I need to measure to have some sense of what I did to it when making changes. Im going to play it for a while and maybe change strings.

:frown: Sorry if I came across as condescending. I'm one of those technical players, so all my instruments are modified for maximum performance to the point where I'll even make subtle adjustments depending on the music I'm playing. I'm like a racecar driver that also works on cars. I forget that most people are not as obsessive as I am when it comes to their instruments.

True. I think all my guitars just have regular strings, but I have six bass guitars and all of them have completely different strings (steel, nickel plated, flats, tape-wound, ground-wound, and coated). In fact, it's because of how important bass strings are that I have so many basses, each one has a distinct sound.

This is a word document from Schecter. I emailed them asking for factory setup so I know where their zero is. Fender has it right on their website - I think it's useful to know where factory zero is. They were very prompt with a response and it was just in a text document lol

It's too bad they just sent you a generic for a 4-string bass instead of the specs for a 5-string. I think these are fine as a starting point, but ultimately your setup should match your playing style. I usually start with the neck as straight as possible and saddles all the way down then add relief/height as needed. For instance, my J-bass is for rock and aggressive playing and has steel strings with higher action than my P-bass with tape-wound strings that I use for mellow stuff.

Well, that's what they sent so that's that. I'll just carefully figure out how to get the instrument where I like it. What I'm not going to do is waste my life away sitting on a Bass players message board where a bunch of butt captains who bring 8x12 Ampeg cabinets to a rural VFW to play CCR covers for their aunt and her 5 pass around whore friends brag about their 67 Chevys and in between Kyle's 12 minute guitar solo they get another order of cheese fries and buy 20 bux worth of pull tabs. Its like we are all very happy you have mancave worth of equipment but it doesn't help your personality or your pockface, Elon.

I think most social media is bad for guitar/bass advice. There are too many blockheads full of misinformation and numbskulls that talk confidently about subjective qualities. TalkBass.com is almost unusable and it feels like every thread gets derailed by a few know-it-alls who want to argue with each other. Honestly, with setups I think people overthink it. I really feel it all boils down to how much fret buzz you can deal with. Like, if your frets start buzzing in the middle of the neck loosen the truss rod and if the buzz at the highest frets raise the saddles (assuming you don't need fretwork, though doing this is way easier than you think and mostly takes courage not skill). Oh, and I only mess with the nut to fix intonation issues with the first few frets -- the nut doesn't affect action as much as truss and saddles.

Re: My (new) open box instrument - Im waiting for fedex

Post by TheWhat »

I think it is true that the truss rod is something you should be comfortable with. In the past I watched people crank the absolute ★■◆● out of a truss rod and that is a no-no. Also, not like remembering what you did so you can reverse a mistake. What finally gave me the confidence to try messing with adjustments was after I successfully sharpened the blades and setup a reel mower my hippie ex had. Small turns on the bolts made huge differences when getting the thing to be able to slice a piece of paper like scissors. So then I got to thinking... I bet a truss rod is like that... like maybe an eighth of a turn is a bigger deal than you may think... so I tried it and it was true. And in Minnesota you basically have to know how to adjust with the seasons drastically changing.

So what I'm saying is over-thinking can be a problem but so can having a small amount of information and thinking you're an expert - especially with a truss rod (or politics), because you can ruin things to the point where its not worth it to pay for repairs.

I've read TalkBass and it was pretty annoying. I also was reading a local bass forum because I knew some of the people. It's not bad - the range is real badasses who I've seen live 30 times to the clowns that rent a UHaul to dolly in their 5 foot cabinets, with a wireless system, 2 pedal boards and fuckin spandex to play for 6 people on a Wednesday up 'der Norf of Elko at Dino's Bar n Grill. The real pros have their live gear streamlined to almost nothing but fingers and toes.

So I'm learning not to over-think but to not ★■◆● up my openbox brown gospel 5 string bass so I can finish my international hit song: "Gurl, I take you 'round the wurl, gurl (I take you to McDawno, gurl)"

Ok I've found my first "I don't like this" part of this bass. That's how the 18v battery compartment looks - it's 2 9v on top of each other - but its like 2 sets of 9v wires kind of just hanging out of the hole leading to the eq solders. It's not the end end end of the world because I'll probably change the batteries once a year but it seems pretty janky for a $1250 guitar. The Fender has a plastic compartment that holds in place... there aren't wires hanging out. Seriously?

On the upside (unless I'm tricking my brains) the bass seems to be responding better with new batteries. I don't know if thats real or what but its good. But I don't like that design at all because it seems like one of those wires are going to flake at some point.

We love Logic Pro loops to make Aerobics speed porno music to play bass over... the "sound pack" is called "Soulection" It's neat. I have a bunch of Maschine expansion packs as well. I'll just play for hours on loops and stare at muted Anatoly videos on youtube I don't know how healthy that is but I suppose watching war footage is worse.

That's the setting I used for the Aguilar Amp Suite. I got it for $99 and it's been totally worth it but oddly I don't like the way it handles 3rd party IRs, sounds weird. But the built in IRs are awesome and I like the pedals too. People ★■◆● about the $199 price point but I would say its worth it if you play headphones all the time like me... Ive used the ★■◆● out that muffasucka.

My theory on the battery connection is it's due to people commonly forgetting to remove batteries causing them to leak. A really bad leak with classic 9v leads is much a much easier fix than a battery box. I'm going to speak from experience here because I 3D print and sell replacement battery covers for active basses and you wouldn't believe how many basses exist today that don't have proper replacement parts like battery boxes. but those classic 9v leads? I'm sure they will be around as long as that bass exists.

That said, I prefer the battery box. One bass I own had the classic 9v leads but I got tired of grabbing a screwdriver every time I needed to get to the battery so I installed a box that flips open.

So youre saying the way its routed with the two 9v connections is ok? Weird. I guess theres really no reason to mess with it unless its to change batteries.

Now I almost want to change strings to get as close to new as possible. God knows what they did to it when no one was looking - they may have smeared the strings with their yabby.

Now to stay with the factory Ernie Ball 45-130 Super Long or get something else with the same string sizes. d'addario makes the same set in 2 types - I dont know what that fancy NY thing is. Is that for like Metal spiked nutcup wearing raprock rage against the machine but im on sony records that is the machine and Che was a rapist pissed off guy music?

Right. Imagine accidentally leaving a battery in the bass for a couple years and the resulting leak severely corrodes the contacts. To clean it you might have to remove the battery box and if bad enough, replace it. But if there is no replacement part you're out of luck. Those battery terminals are super easy to replace in minutes with a soldering iron. I personally don't like them, but it's future-proof. A quality instrument should last a lifetime.

The D'Addario NYXT strings claim to stay in tune better and I've tried them and mostly agree. That said, I never have problems with tuning and I'm not sold on the tension of the standard pack so I'll probably go back to the XL series.

I dont get how you would forget to change the batteries? It's an active bass, they are required to make sound. Does that really happen? I thought I had heard it only really happens with AA and not 9v and Duracell had fixed the problem? Oddly enough I was reading a picture of the Ernie Ball packaging for the factory set and THEY sponsor the Rage Against my Mommy Who makes My Car Payments bass player. lol

TheWhat wrote: Sun Mar 22, 2026 4:19 pmI dont get how you would forget to change the batteries? It's an active bass, they are required to make sound. Does that really happen?
It happens to me. First, one of my basses with active pickups is ON when plugged in, and coming from a passive bass background I had a habit of just leaving my bass hooked into the amp when not in use. I went through a lot of batteries because of this. Second, only 2/6 of my bass guitars have active electronics so I easily forget about batteries when I'm playing the other four. I haven't had any leaks, but I've definitely left batteries in them for many months at a time. 9v leaks are rare but they still happen.

Just to reinforce what I was saying about battery boxes versus classic leads + cover plate, yesterday someone contacted me about a replacement for their Fender bass. The hinged battery cover broke and they wanted to know if I could make a replacement. You wouldn't believe how often I get messages like this. But if the person simply was missing the cover plate they could probably make one themselves with a sheet of pickguard material.

EDIT: I just realized there is space on my active pickup bass for a switch, so maybe one day I'll wire it as an on/off for the battery. My Yamaha has only an active EQ, but that already has a on/off switch on the body.

Ok. I know you are supposed to unplug active when not in use and have read that you should remove the batteries if you aren't using an instrument long term (storage). This whole string changing thing might become a bigger thing. I bought a 2pack GHS for the Jazz bass 5 years ago! So the strings are 5 years old... but since I have a whole set as back up I was thinking about trying LaBella flats on the Jazz. I'm so used to 6 string that you just throw away the strings when testing but I think bass strings can be saved if you don't damage them? If I bought the LaBella's and wanted to go back to the GHS would it be a problem? Or should I just shudup and eat the $55 bux?

It's a good idea to do a minor setup whenever you change to a new type/brand of strings because the tension and thickness will likely be slightly different.

Bass strings are too costly (and durable) to simply throw away. When I try out new strings I always save the old pair, at least for a while, and I almost always have one or two used sets lying around. In the attached image you can see I like to save part of the string's packaging and write the install date on the back along with what bass they are on. A set of tape-wounds I bought in Spring of 2022 were on two other basses before landing on the current on. (I don't plan on ever replacing this specific set, but I like having the info.) The ziplock bag has a set of Slinkys I bought in 2019 and I'm saving them in case I no longer want to use these Fender-branded strings I'm trying out. I saved some round wound strings from J-Bass I use at practice and and replaced them with flats, then later put on a set of steel strings from a different J-Bass, then threw those steels out and went back to the original round wounds from two years previous. I still have the flats in case I want to use them again.

I also boil strings and reuse them at least once before throwing them out. And 3/6 basses I own will never have the strings replaced, probably.

Fun story: I spent something like $60 on a custom set of GHS "Contact Core Super Steels" tapered strings for my heavy metal bass and I hated them so much they went into the garbage in less than a week.

I think I bought the GHS because it was a 2 pack for the price of 1 set and I'm cheap as evidence by the fact I bought an open box bass to save $400 US American Dolla. I don't really have anything to compare them to. I just remember they took quite sometime to dull the metallic sound they had - so I have an unopened pack and the ones that would be removed for the flats. I don't know.

I think these are what I may try "La Bella 760FS Deep Talkin' Bass Flatwound Bass Guitar Strings - .045-.105 Standard" they talk deep like Boyz 2 Men gurl I'm only human I didn't mean to ★■◆● your best friend but you'll forgive me gurl because you have low self-esteem and I done broke your brains in this trailer park that has limited options

I've only heard good things about La Bella. I've always been hesitant to try any brand that doesn't list their string tension though. Tension is super important to me (I know I'm in the minority of players that care).

So I went with the factory set for the Schecter to give "what they think it's supposed to sound like" fresh set. And I went with the Ernie Ball flats because the string gauges are the same as the Fender and they were $5 off lol (free shipping! for next Wednesday) If they suck I will change again. My guitars still have D'Addario but for this round I will try out Ernie Ball stuff. I was looking at the Ernie Ball Pino Palladino flats and those are $80 a set - it's like go hump yourself I don't have his hands anyway

Also, thank you for your opinions on these subjects I've never been studious about instrument stuff but I am becoming more so with my old arse.

Yeah I think you get diminishing returns with a lot of expensive music equipment. I'm pretty sure a lot of stuff is simply priced and marketed to people with a lot of disposable income, usually old guys who are big earners with grown children. Same thing with music concerts. Yes, I have more money than I did when I was 20, but that doesn't mean I'll spend $200 to see a band I saw then.

My real addiction has been buying sample libraries and samples - according to my receipts I spent like a thousand last year and I dont even use them half the time - I buy them, get lost for 6-7 hours playing around with the library and never touch them again. And compared to some of these soon to be replaced by AI videogame/fantasy elf composers a thousand is chickken feed in a year.

https://www.orchestraltools.com/duplex-saxophones
I bought this one on a whim at 50% off and never use it anymore. I mean it sounds really, really good with tons of range, and variation but it sits there being 15-20% of an actual physical guitar so that's why I bought a bass to punish myself for buying unused samples.

:\

Image
Maybe they fixed it. I hope so because I have a bunch of bass IRs from Celestion and I just bought some Eden 2x12 and 4x10s that good in other IR loaders I dont know why the Aguilar suite was having trouble. We shal see!

I can see spending all that money if I were a professional musician who had to create for a wide variety of genres. As a hobbyist I go the opposite way and use as little as possible. Years ago a friend of mine who did all her work on Native Instruments "Maschine" cornered me and questioned why I seem to be obsessed with battery operated crap. I told her that their limitations sparked my creativity. She started to understand and commented about how recently in the middle of writing she spent 45 minutes just previewing sounds and didn't make any music at all in that night because she couldn't decide. Less is more.

Monsieur 6-Basses over here say less is more lol =)

I have Maschine Mikro mk3. $200 bux with the software version 3 and a lot of sounds. I've been using drum machines since the 1980's and it (mpc type clones) is my favorite I've used. Not that I know it inside and out and am some wizard... it's just the physical trigger pads are awesome and sensitive. Like if you really want to program hi-hat and snare with lots of dynamic variation so it doesnt machine gun effect it's great - one take and you loops duplicate 6 variations in short order. Most of the time I use it as a loop on/off-er. If I just feel like playing I'll click on some beat and turning off individual elements is way easier than using a DAW... then I just go into meditation bass mode.

These pads right here, these buttons are the best I've used... I like them better than an MPC I borrowed 5 years ago, the pads not the functions or anything else... the physical triggers are like perfect gelatin pads that you can utilize the 0-128 midi gradient. I don't know what Native Instruments did, if they ate acid with sugarplum faries or some ★■◆● but the buttons are perfect and if it breaks I'll buy another one for $200 bux. They're like Japanese condoms.

Yeah too many things is a problem. Not that I'm prolific anymore or ever but when I went on actual songwriting stretches it was always acoustic guitar or piano with voice - you start adding any more than that you start becoming an engineer. I don't even like using a word processor during songwriting... it's a pad of paper and pen with scribbles of faces because I can't do graphic arts. Just melody and chord scaffolding and the backbeat of the instruments. If it can standup stripped down you can start adding the window dressing.

I'm a hobbyiset too but I do love the stuff. I love the buttons sometimes. But if you want to get anything done you block macro with one rhythm section instrument and work down to the micro.

And also if you feel it you can do this open-sesame-snake-charmer-type-★■◆● to mevmorivefatchixwit

This is like a NI loop from a Maschine expansion that you (i did tonight) just add ★■◆● over and remove it when your done so you can call yourself a composer or some ★■◆● with rudimentary High School band Orchestral Tools library sax orchestration and a sample of me saying "Mai Kneef" into a phone and its fun now onto the next thing that will go into the pile of unused nothingness but sometimes I can actually make enough to pay for a new computer like the last time I made "On Hold" music custom for my friend and she still uses it, I probably could use a new computer now. lol

I'm about to give this guy another $20. Rad drum samples that are mapped for Maschine and a bunch of other formats so you don't have to tediously make drum sets - and he mixes the samples through preamps so you basically don't have to do much beyond levels and they sound great. This is how the addiction starts: "It's only $20 dolla daddy. I'll make you feel real good for $20 dolla daddy" Next thing you know you spent a thousand in a year. These demos sound so cool and he is an ace programmer beatsmith. Ok I'm buying it.

Goldbaby 12v Loop, that guy is rad. This preset in the Aguilar Plugin Suite is called: "Filled with Rage" which one would assume is supposed to be an approximation of Rage Against my Trustafarian Lifestyle I hate You mOmmy bass players settings, font. I guess people love him or he's really important to a lot of folks. I just don't know because I don't like their music, but I saw an interview with him and he seemed cool and was really into music. So anyway this is just doing 2 chord Bootsy Collins fills with this preset which is the fuzz pedal. These effects sound fuckin wicked on software synths too. Put an organ through this plugin you got John Paul Jones' giant pecker in a church n'★■◆●.

Hahaha. I also have 15 drum machines.

Hey, I can't play those Google Drive clips, you might have the permissions set incorrectly? I've tried in two browsers and nothing loads.

Thanks for fixing the tracks on your Drive. I've never heard of Goldbaby. Is it a company or just one person? I don't know anything about sample sites, I've always made my own stuff.

Goldbaby is like studio guy who has a company name and he makes samples from his gear. I think he may have been a published producer type guy. I just like his sample libraries mapped for Maschine and Logic (and many others) that sound good straight away and you can of course manipulate. I used to be a tinkerererer but I can take it or leave it now - if the sound is cool that's good enough most of the time. Maybe its a phase but I much prefer just playing a bass or guitar for hours over high quality than knob tweaking so much.
I mean I have a Zoom H6 field recorder with different mic options that I can do custom ★■◆●.

I'm really liking the flats on the Jazz bass and holy muvah the 5 string really did need a string change. They mustve had that bass in the Sweetwater showroom for a couple of years because the new strings are way different. I have been exchanging hand fluids with metalheads :|

Sounds amazing. Like the bassline, really interesting intervals I never would have thought to use. Speaking of flats, my friend gave me his 1965 silvertone bass last night for a setup and I'm going to put flats on it since I have an extra set and I think that will bring out the vintage character of that bass. Can't wait to hear how it sounds. The guy never uses it and the strings currently on the bass are probably 40 years old or more, which has it's own interesting sound I guess.

I need to stop spending money on this horseshit but this company just did emulations (captures) of these Electro-Harmonix classics. I'm for sure getting the Big Muff one (it comes with 3 flavors of Muff).. but you can get the four for $109 intro price... the Memory Man is pretty sweet. The Big Muff is on the 808 part and the Memory Man, Mistress, and chorus are in the aux of the 12volt loop. The Big Muff sounds so cool on guitar or bass before the fake amps... it's smoothdrive as compared to some of these newer nutcup overdrives. Goddamn money and you can't eat plugins. You can start a campfire with a guitar in case the world economy crashes... but you can't eat big muff captures.

Oh that sounds really good. I hadn't really though about that use case. Can't go wrong with EH. Basically every pedalboard me and my friend have used in the past 20 years includes some EH gear. Never thought about them as plugins though. I've been a hardware guy for the last fifteen years or so, first because of the difficulty of plugins on Linux then later because the limitations of hardware keep me in check. I used to really overdo my tracks when I did everything in-the-box.

I compromised with myself and just got the Big Muff set for $40 US clams. I don't really use stereo chorus or flangers much and I'm pretty sure I can get something close to a delay like that with what I have - but the Big Muff is making the bass sound ba-bang. :)

Muff -> $10 Comp_of_the_Week -> Neural DSP DarkGlass used as Mesa IRs host pedal disabled. Added fancy arrows because I'm a graphic artist

Pretty cool sound I had another tone that was less dripping gotta remember how I did that. It comes with Pi, Ram's Head, and Russian versions

I think you made the right choice, there are lots of time and modulation effects out there but when it comes to distortion and fuzz, which are so important to the fundamental tone, there aren't as many good options.

I actually use a Muff Bass PI in my band and I have the EH Bass Soul Food Overdrive at home. Good ★■◆●.
