Recommendations for a good (free) pop-up blcoker needed

Post by Darktalyn1 »

Hey everyone...

Recently I have started getting a ton of pop-ups. I downloaded the google toolbar and that has cut down on them but I'm still getting them. They're not like IE pop up windows just gray windows with text.

I am getting one every 10-15 minutes or so. Please someone help me! If you know of a good pop up blocker I can download for free, let me know!

1) download/install/use firefox
2) download/install/use adaware

I'm betting the pop-ups are actually coming from adware running on your comp.

Also, disable the message service if you haven't already.

Like this:

Start->Run->services.msc->Messenger->right click->properties->Startup type = disabled

Reboot.

Go here to read more about which services are just plain evil:

If turning off this service breaks anything, report back here :)

Ya, I use google toolbar, too. It worked great for about a year, stopping 100% of pop-ups. However, recently the scumbags have found a way around most popup blockers including google's. It still catches quite a few, though. I also recommend disabling the spyware options on the google toolbar.

Judging by your post, the Messenger service is still active. Turn it off as per Genghis's directions.

One wonders why that service is running by default in all NT/2K/XP installations.

watchout for msm messenger in xp sp2 it is more fully intergrated to ie, disable it in ie tools-manage add-ins and then hunt down the exe and rename/kill it.
i,av also noticed that xp after sp2 does not seem to try to connect to those unexplained m$ servers as much either.

Yes indeed, if you use XP! :D :D :D

And if you don't, well a combo of Spybot (turning on its "Immunize" feature really helps out) with Ad-Aware works well. I don't use the Googlebar for 2 reasons: (1) I need as much viewable space as possible! :) (2) Don't really mind pop-ups that much.

1) If you're using windows, you should be using XP. It's forgivable if you're using 2k3 server. ;)

2) You can move the google toolbar next to the menu at the very top right of the screen such that it takes up no additional vertical distance. Like so.

because some places use it, we do where i work at.

the way the servers are set here if some thang f's up or it shuts down for some oddreasion it sends me a message saying some thang like "heat level to high! shuting down server <server name>", its just that people abuse that good system.
