Is this guy FOS or what?

Post by Iceman »

This guy at a computer shop in town claims that there is a bad capacitor batch plaguing the motherboard industry. He showed me an MSI board with 5 or 6 capacitors that were blown on it. He claims that the ABIT, GigaByte, and ASUS boards also have this problem. Is he full of chit or does this guy know what he is talking about?

He's close to the truth, it was not a Bad batch, it was an incomplete stolen formula which was resold

Wow, that's old school. I can remeber reading that back then. You where supposed to look and see if your caps where starting to puff up, pushing the tops up.

It's fairly old news, if you motherboard is post 2002, you shouldn't have much to worry about.

The motherboard this guy showed me was a socket 939 board. It is less than 3 months old.

I too remember this being a Kt7 era problem. I have an A7V in the garage with bulging caps now (not in use).

Maybe this guy has a 939 board with bad caps and is attributing it to this older problem? Fluke?

It could be pure coincidence. I don't remember ever running into this problem in '01 or even recently. Something tells me it's not an issue anymore.

They were mostly found on Abit boards, but some other boards used the same caps

I sensed that he enjoyed being the 'one in the know' and it is possible he was trying to get me to buy one of the off brand boards he has in stock.

So ... Based upon your comments ... I am going to assume that this guy is FOS until I am proved otherwise.

BTW ccb: Those pix look EXACTLY like what this guy showed me
