I'd like to see id do it. It would be a nice way for them to explore a different aspect of the FPS genre, and an id Software Descent 4 could not go wrong.

If you mapped banking to the gamepad's motion-sensors, you could bank left/right by tilting the controller on a horozontal axis ...that would make it a bit less of an adjustment. (I do this kind of stuff instinctively whenever I use a gamepad anyway - whether 6dof is built-in or not.)
I've heard that the Playstation 3 has this capability.

D4 on PS3 would be awesome. HD quality, and possibly 5.1 surround.

That would be slightly ironic, since wasn't ID's Doom competing with Descent on its release (like how Unreal was competing with Quake)?

Descent was the Red-Pill.
Quake was the easily alternative Blue-Pill.

Take this, the story ends, you wake in your bed and you believe whatever you want to believe.
There are only 2 dimensions.
Rolling is sacrelidge.

Dakatsu - yes, that would be correct. Ironic, certainly, but if they saw a future in the genre not unreasonable.

I don't expect anything similar to happen, though, since id seem to have a large project in the works which may well take another couple years to finish.

They do - the game \"Rage\", plus a brand new and beautiful rendering engine.

Like you said, no reason to expect it, but I guess we can say the same of Interplay. :P

"Aggressor Prime" is probably all excited about D4 so he can cheat in it like he did in D3. 9_9

I personally think if the game has to be Descent, it should have the same design as Descent IV that Midnight Squadron was working on. However, I doubt that's going to happen, so it would still be interesting to see what game they come up with.

If they go the D2 route, it could be like Descent IV... if they go the D3 route... maybe they could make ships that are much faster and make the outdoor levels like Paranoia have some "up-ness" or "vertical-ity." =P faster weapons too. :P

jake, I actually think that's a good idea. If anyone makes D4 we could send them a compilation of what went wrong with D1/D2/D3 and ideas for D4.

skru the Wii? Are you out of your mind? =P Sony just copied the Wii and the game boy advance with their stupid tilt control "dual shock" controller, which is based on a controller (dual shock) that copied the Super NES and N64 controllers.
TIGERassault wrote:Hmm... how to conrol a Pyro on a Wii...

Wiimote pointing for orientation.
Nunchuck gyro positioning for sliding.
Nunchuck thumbstick for accelerating and spinning.
B button for primaries, A button for secondaries.
Left and right D-pad for changing primary, up and down D-pad for changing secondary.
(-) button for main menu, (+) button for Guidebot.
(Z) for afterburner, (C) for converter, (1) and (2) for some other stuff I haven't thought up of yet.

There, easily done! And they're all common controls for a Wii game too!
That's actually a horrible configuration for Descent IMO =P
I like this one better:
Wii mote pointing = turning
rotating the wii-mote = banking
B button = fire primaries
A button = fire secondaries
nunchuk control stick = sliding
C and Z = forward and reverse
D pad the same as above
nunchuk gyro = afterburner, or switch this control with C and Z

blingo ^_~

Yeah, that looks better to me, except for the nunchuck gyro. Switching for C and Z looks better.

The reason you don't want to use only the motion sensors for sliding is that you couldn't do any continuous sliding, e.g. you could only do quick momentary \"dodge\" slides, so no trichording.

While that's a point, what I meant was that rotating the nunchuck around on the horizontal/vertical can still work.

People are so worked up about a phantom Descent game that it wouldn't be surprising if it went up to 200 pages.

true... just look at CD.... Haven't heard boo dittley about that project in a few months... It sucks when there are people that want to play a new descent... but no one wants to spend the money to invest in it. If I had dough I would... Just not to interplay.

I really don't think anyone on this board actually has the money to invest in something like that.

WOW!! Just got back from the Middle East (again) and decided to come on D3BB and see what's been going on and incredibly enough, the making of D4 is still a topic of conversation. That amazes me. This was a hot topic back in 2003.
Most of us are vets of this game for least 10 years and some of you are even much longer then that.
I would love too see another descent version come out. I hope that it does.
Mean while. Just wanted to say hi and hope all of you are doing well and having a great holiday season.
Happy Holidays to you all.

hehe! so you could actually spend 10 bucks or so and become a majority shareholder? Couldn't you then just go ahead an order them to make D4, or at least sell the rights to a promising candidate?

order who? there are no employees!

i think as majority shareholder you get a big throne or something. Businesses pay for this throne as part of their stock exchange registry fee - so every company has one.

Just a suggestion

Won't do any good, because the privately-owned Parallax has the rights to develop or delegate development of the next Descent game.

Or do we have to go over all this again?

Can't stop someone from making a Descent-like mod/full game, ala Core Decision or whatever its name is...

This topic is still going? I mean really; Descent (as a franchise) is dead, buried and has since pushed up a couple generations of flowering plants... I have my doubts anything interesting would even come from the D3 source getting released (although I would love to see that happen anyway).

You people here are so desperately hoping for the next big Descent thing that you are willing to believe just anything ... see CD.

You had better support D2X-XL (going D4X), because right now it looks like that's the only real chance of ever getting an up to date Descent (2) like game (that will on top of it not just run on MS Windows ... or some bloody console, that is).

Well ... hope dies last, as we say here.

Have you tried the mod?

It's worked since it's first release and all things considered, it works VERY well.

There was an \"internal\" release in November adding upgradable lasers and quad firing. Hopefully, there will be another very soon with the pickups, new weapons ect.

I'm also interested to see if Deep6 shows up. The whole point of that game was to make something that \"feels\" like Descent.

As someone who was on the \"D4\" team I suspect..

Interplay = dead
Descent Franchise = dead
6DOF Gameplay = ????
