Installing D3 Demo on Vista

Post by Sedwick »

My bro-in-law's PC's running Vista and I'm trying to install the D3 demo 2 I got from PD. After the usual dialogs saying where to put the files and whatever, it started installing and right away popped up this error \"during the data move process -113\". It mentions the file group WZSD80F.tmp\\data1.hdr. Any ideas how to get past this? We thought about a VM, but we don't have an OS to install on it, and Microsoft's doesn't support his particular version of Vista. Thanks in advance...

Last time I tried, ya couldn't get the D3 Demo to work on XP ... I doubt you can get it to go on Vista.

The D3 demo does work in XP, the problem is getting it to install. I think it had something to do with where temp was set in the system environment variables. Try temporarily changing yours to C:\\tmp\\ or something else as long as the path is less than 8 characters long.

Well, changing the TEMP and TMP variables did let the installation finish, so thanks for that. But when I hit Play from the launcher, it says main.exe stopped working. So I switched from OpenGL to Direct3D and that got me in, but after the intell screens and the \"Prepare for Descent\", it did nothing, so I hit Enter and it gave the error again. Further ideas?

Try running it in compatibility mode.

Right-clicked on it in the Start menu, pulled up Properties, went to the Compatibility tab, tried XP SP2, Win2K, NT SP5, Win 98/Me, and Win95. Same results--\"Prepare for Descent\", ding, mouse appears, and I hear what sounds like the Gyro bot until I hit Alt-Tab to come to the dialog I posted above. Even restarted and tried in 640x480/256 colors.

EDIT: Some findings in the error.log file. The Vista event viewer showed nothing. Guess we'll just have to try our luck with the full game and see what happens...

It may be something specific to the particular machine configuration, but it is probably just the demo 2 age coming into play.

One last thing you can try, although I doubt it makes a difference. Open up the D3 folder, right click on main.exe and run THAT in compatibility mode. Descent3.exe is just the launcher not the game. If you want the quick way use the mouse right button to drag main.exe to your desktop and select \"create shortcut\", then bring up properties on the shortcut and add -launched to the end of the target, and select the compatibility mode from there. Just in case Vista isn't applying the compatibility mode to other applications.
