Genuine Microsoft icon in the system tray and SP2

Post by thewolfe »

I'm working on a Gateway GP and there is a Microsoft (blue Star) icon in the system tray.

It says that \"this version of Windows is no longer secure\" when I hold the mouse over it.

If I right-click on it I get the following:

Obtain XP service pack 2, benefits of genuine and change notification settings.

I also get the following message \"the Windows service pack installation did not complete. The system is in an unstable state. Go to the control panel, add or remove programs and uninstall Windows service pack.

I have noticed that there are numerous unsuccessful installs.

I have uninstalled SP2 and notice there are a few windows XP hot fix for service pack 2. Should I delete those also.

Now Windows update continues to want to install SP2.

There use to be a place to \"hide\" and install so Windows wouldn't continue to try to update it but I can't find it.

Any other things I should do?

Try downloading the SP2a (or better yet SP3) network install package and see if that works.

I believe that blue star means it's not legit.

I'm still able to downward all the other updates except SP2 and at this point I got the machine running pretty good so I'm going to leave it alone for now.

yes, that is the Windows Genuine Advantage icon popping up showing that you have a blacklisted or pirated copy of XP

No, if the copy of Windows is not legit you will get a pop up WGA stating that. Also it will not allow you to install SP2/3.

Sounds like the SP needs to be reinstalled and possibly re-activated.

I agree with the others, try skipping SP2 and go right to SP3.

take out the original gateway cd and reinstall

if you do not have the original

you can use Windows XP Home/Pro OEM (respective to their CD KEY on the back of the machine) and install using that - and fully activate it also

then use the serial number on the front of the case and get the correct Drivers from gateway

otherwise tell the owner to purchase a legitimate version of windows XP

XP upgrade use XP CD only - reinstall over clean format and have their original o/s cd and cdkey handy when prompted from XP upgrade install process

I seem to have a better workout dodging your stupidity than attempting to grasp the weight of your intelligence.
