The last and only person who was officially a "businessman" before he was elected president was..........Herbert Hoover. The next president may just be.........Mitt Romney.

Will history repeat itself with another Great Depression, maybe at the behest our future second businessman president with big business ideas, all over AGAIN? Will the curse repeat a second time?

What scare tactics? The left would never stoop so low…only Republicans do that.

No, I’m not referring to the sources, I’m referring to the OP.

TC, you really don't know much about American history, do you? Hoover was not the cause of the Great Depression at all. If anything, he was simply unfortunate enough to be the President of the U.S. (at that time prosperous and optomistic) when the economy (not just the US economy) took a plunge. Any quick look into Hoover and his policies and you'd see his policies promoted a stronger economy and more efficient government believing the economy and government to be riddled with waste and inefficiency.

When the economy started to collapse, no one at that time had ever really dealt with such matters and they struggled to find methods to shore things up. The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act was well intentioned, but had the opposite effect.

No one can blame Hoover for the Great Depression. Study history a bit better next time.

Actually, you can even lay blame on all 3 prior Republican Presidents including Hoover, but I guess it really depends on whether Hoover was a proponent of laissez faire policies, or not. History is always colored by the politics of those who wrote it down in the history books.

Hoover's policies caused it:

Hoover wasn't responsible:

Take your pick based on what you agree with.

We can even blame Hoover, and by extension, Obama, based on what he's trying to do now:

But my only reason for posting this is not to lay the blame on Romney, but because of the historical and creepy coincidences between him and Hoover being the only businessmen politicians elected as a president or potentially to be elected as president. Are we just reliving our own economic mistakes of the past?

But that all may be a moot point because we are now a global economy. And the next shock to that economy actually has to do with Romney's previous work at Bain, who made wads of cash by outshoring jobs to China. China's the next catastrophe.

Obama's got company, from both parties. He's in the same company as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, James Knox Polk, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, Rutherford Birchard Hayes, Chester Alan Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Richard Milhous Nixon, Gerald Rudolph Ford and William Jefferson Clinton. Do they all creep you out woody?

Techincally, Bush was a businessman, an oil company executive, so that makes 2 elected, and one maybe to be elected businessmen. Lets see......things blew up under Hoover AND Bush, both with reputed business sense. Maybe Romney's next in line to crash the economy too? :P
