I'm looking for a free (s/w) voice chat program that I can use while playing RTS games.
Anyone have any recommendations?

Teamspeak is prob ur best choice. But if ur a Mac pilot, TS won't work cuz it hasn't been ported yet 2 Mac. RW is the only voice comm app that I am aware of for Mac.

gamevoice has a free version as well and I think the sound quality is beter than teamspeak. But since TS is free it is much more widely used and the teams I play on use it all the time. My brother and I use GV when we are the only two playing. GV also has no support anymore from microsoft. But you can get it at:
www.gamevoice.com

It was built on Battlefield commander technology, a company Microsoft sucked up a long time ago. I'm guessing they used it to help create the xbox voice chat compression etc.

thanks for the input. I'll google TS and GV and try them out.

I dont want to have to put up a server to get the voice chat to work...I'm just looking for a program that will enable me and a friend to communicate while we play online, instead of using our speaker phones :o
Will either TS or GV work w/o a server? just a setup on each pc that will be communicating?

Try skype then. It doesn't need a server and I know at least two people can use it together. I don't know if it works with more than 2 though. There are some public GV servers though if they are still around. And it's pretty easy to set up a GV server. I have not setup a TS one but I imagine it's not that hard either. And GV can run as a service.

lots of people say Ventrilo sounds better, and doesn't use as much resources as Teamspeak

Skype does have 2 reg keys.
One is used to activate the spyware install and phoning home. I think I copied a .txt file workaround posted to the groups before it disapeared.
Nope but there is a workaround out there and i'll keep searching.

The Spyware is not activated yet, and if you only use it for voice chat, talk is there will be a freeware version. P2P to POTS is in the works very soon.

Ferno and I use it fairly often and it's better than the phone.

My P3 800 gets ~ + 50-150 ms lag using Skype in D3,
but I suspect it's my ISP's performance causing this.

Also I have Win 98 SE, Skype is an XP appy.

to me ventrillo sounds like an mp3 encoded in 96kbps versus cd, and teamspeak sounds like 128. neither are very good, but serve their purpose. i use both, and i don't think vent sounds any better at all. it does use less resources though, they're right about that. but teamspeak has a ton more features and is easier to use. most gamers have both because they are both popular, neither will do you wrong.

TS2 uses installable codecs. Use whatever suits you.

i'm talking about the little bit of distortion you will have with a mic that isn't studio grade (how many of us use those with voice chat?) versus the little bit of distortion you get with 128. i think ts sounds a tad less fuzzy and distorted, but you can hear people clearly with both. the only thing really seperating the two for me are the features and usability, where teamspeak reigns supreme.
