Alternate domain

Just FYI, since descentbb.net keeps throwing some stupid error, the site seems to load more reliably if you use the alternate domain name: https://dbb.d3k.org
So if you read this, try bookmarking that domain and seeing if it helps the next time the main domain is throwing the error. I will nag the hosting provider again when I have the time.

Getting this sometimes with this new domain. The regular site has issues still about too many connections.

General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysqli ]

User 'sploitzc_dbbv3' has exceeded the 'max_user_connections' resource (current value: 1) [1226]

An sql error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact an administrator if this problem persists.

FYI, when it happens, things slow to a crawl, refuse to load or else display a "Too many requests" error. Sometimes even with the alternate domain.

Dumb question. What if one of us just self-hosted the site? Back in the day home internet sucked but now many of us have fiber. (I don't yet, but some of us do).

I can imagine a minipc running a docker or podman container running almalinux or some other alternative to cent os. Sounds like a fun project to me.

Chatgpt o3 whipped up a quick compose.yml template that still needs lots of stuff changed:

Code: Select all

version: "3.9"

services:
  db:
    image: bitnami/mariadb:11
    container_name: phpbb-db
    restart: unless-stopped
    environment:
      - MARIADB_ROOT_PASSWORD=change_me_root
      - MARIADB_DATABASE=phpbb
      - MARIADB_USER=phpbb
      - MARIADB_PASSWORD=change_me_db
    volumes:
      - db_data:/bitnami/mariadb

  phpbb:
    image: bitnami/phpbb:latest
    container_name: phpbb-app
    restart: unless-stopped
    depends_on:
      - db
    ports:
      - "8080:80" # browse to http://<host>:8080
      - "8443:443" # optional SSL passthrough
    environment:
      - PHPBB_DATABASE_HOST=db
      - PHPBB_DATABASE_PORT_NUMBER=3306
      - PHPBB_DATABASE_NAME=phpbb
      - PHPBB_DATABASE_USER=phpbb
      - PHPBB_DATABASE_PASSWORD=change_me_db
      - PHPBB_USERNAME=admin
      - PHPBB_PASSWORD=change_me_admin
      - PHPBB_EMAIL=admin@example.com
      - PHPBB_FORUM_NAME=MyForum
    volumes:
      - phpbb_data:/bitnami/phpbb
      - apache_data:/bitnami/apache
      - php_data:/bitnami/php

volumes:
  db_data:
  phpbb_data:
  apache_data:
  php_data:
Of course you'd have to put the paths for the volumes and st the passwords and you'd have to port forward 8080 back to 80. You'd also want to ssh into the mini pc.

One of the things I complained about to the host when these errors were nearly constant was "This site could run on a potato chip with a stick of gum for memory, why am I paying you $15/mo when I could self host it on my raspberry pi and not have these issues?".

Of course I'm paying for it because I don't want to deal with all the backend security ★■◆● and maintaining the SSL certificate and all that, but as far as the resource/hardware/bandwidth demands of everything on this host, it is practically nothing. I could easily host it on my home gigabit symmetrical fiber line, I just don't have the time or energy to deal with maintaining it.

Krom, please don't judge me too harshly, but I'm going to give you the secret to making progress for these side projects and hobbies: You can do anything if you're willing to do a bad job.

It's starting to get crazy now. I got an error message that said "not acceptable!" I don't even know what that would mean. lol
