A question about installing D3 on a new(er) system
Help!
Okay, I hope all of you hard core Material Defenders don't just laugh at me for this question. I'm not as up to speed with tech stuff since my hayday between 1995 and 2012. ( I haven't played in nearly that long as well!) But on a whim recently I decided to install Descent 3 on my latest Pyro(PC) just for some fun. Despite some things I read prior to installation mentioning issues just installing the game, it seemed to go very smoothly. The launcher opens fine and I've poked with the other functions which seem functional. But when I hit play I get the following message: "Error SetCoopLevel EXCLUSIVE failed" That sounds like a multiplayer issue maybe? I also had the thought that maybe I need to use the -setdir<path> and -useexedir command lines in the D3 control panel as I did install the game to a custom directory on a second drive. Or I can settle with the -nonetwork command line as I don't plan on playing any multi until I get many months of solo practice in! In any case I'll include as many details as possible about my system:
Processor 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-12700 (2.10 GHz)
Installed RAM 32.0 GB (31.7 GB usable)
Graphics card Intel UHD Graphics 770
Adapter RAM 2.00 GB
Resolution 1920 x 1080 x 60 Hz
Running Direct X 12
Direct Draw Acceleration
Direct 3D Acceleration
AGP Texture Acceleration
All enabled
DX 12 Ultimate Disabled
Storage 542 GB of 1.36 TB used
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Edition Windows 11 Pro
Version 25H2
Installed on 12/4/2024
OS build 26200.8457
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.304.0
Approximate DOM November 2022
My controller of choice for Descent is my CH 586 Combatstick USB that is fully tested and functional in Joy.cpl
Thank you in advance for any input someone might have!

Re: A question about an Old Skool Game on a new(er) system
Despite how it sounds, that error is not a multiplayer or even D3 exclusive error, it is actually a display driver error indicating a failure for the game to take exclusive full screen control. Things to try are make sure your renderer is set correctly, or try OpenGL, or even try a glide wrapper like nGlide. Intel's GPU drivers do not have a good reputation even in current games, let alone supporting something that is nearly 27 years old. Perhaps they are choking on how D3 vanilla always requires 640x480 resolution for its menu screens or some other method D3 uses to take exclusive fullscreen is tripping it up.
Another thing to try, probably your best shot at getting up and running is to download the piccu engine source update which doesn't require exclusive fullscreen to work.

Another thing to check is the version of your D3 installation. Are you patched to the latest official release?

Re: A question about an Old Skool Game on a new(er) system
Thank you for the feedback guys! After having issues with the initial launch I tried Piccu Engine and received this error message:
*UPDATE* I tried Piccu Engine and got a similar result. The first time I launched PiccuEngine.exe my screen simply went black except for the mouse staying active. I had to 3 finger for task manager to shut it down. I tried again and got an error message this time:
Execution in WinMain () was stopped by an access violation
Call Stack:
PiccuEngine.exe 0108acb3()
KERNEL32.DLL 760a5d49()
ntdll.dll 77c7d83b()
ntdll.dll 77c7d7c1()
Copied from my Reddit thread in r/Descent
Thanx again for the help!!!
